Baby is afraid of the dark

What is the fear of the dark?
Around the age of 2, children become aware that going to bed is a time of separation from their parents. Fear of the "dark" then develops. It actually corresponds to the fear of being alone, "abandoned," left to their own devices with their imagination. This is, in fact, the period when imagination takes hold. Finding themselves alone in their bed facing shadows and possible noises can quickly become frightening for your child. But this feeling is completely normal and is part of their psychological development.
This is also the period of the Oedipus complex. The child realizes, in particular, that they are not the sole center of their parent's attention. They also notice that things are happening while they are away and don't want to be excluded. This is why they get up several times or call you back before falling asleep...
However, it's important to make your child understand that one day they won't need these tricks anymore, because they won't be afraid anymore. You have to avoid getting too involved in the child's play, which could end up taking advantage of the situation. It's a fine balance to find.
Little by little, your child will become more reassured, gain self-confidence, develop psychologically, and be able to stay alone in their room. By the age of 3, this fear should fade.
If this continues beyond 4 or 5 years, it is best to consult a doctor.
